Have you ever run in to a product or accessory and just shook your
head thinking, "Man, why didn't I think of this a long time
ago"? After seeing quite a few in the 20 plus years I've been
playing, The Enhancer is one of the most impressive examples of
a simple idea made into a extreamely useful tool for the guitarist
I've had the pleasure of experiencing to date.
Product Info:
The Enhancer is a rear loaded horn cabinet designed to use a combo
amp's existing speaker to improve overall tone and volume. It also
lifts and tilts the otherwise small combo amp cabinet for better
sound projection. The Enhancer redirects the sound emanating from
the backside of your open back combo amp, expanding volume and frequency
response. Its light weight and ease of transport gives you the ability
to carry smaller
pieces that give the same great tone of a larger style cabinet.
Construction:
The Enhancer is constructed withCNC cut premium 9 Ply Baltic Birch
panels and finished with a durable and seamless Polyurea finish
which is very simular to the covering used for most high-end sound
re-enforcement cabinets. It features shock absorbing rubber feet,
a metal reinforced strap handle and a bump pad, which acts like
a gasket between your amp and the cabinet. I t
appears to be very well constructed and durrable, and is lightweight
and easy to carry.
The Enhancer comes in 5 sizes to accommodate almost any combo amp
or open-back cabinet.
Model tested E-SM (small) $339.99 List / $269.99 Street Price.
Road Test:
I took The Enhancer out on a club gig to give it a try. The place
was the classic small club set-up, a brick and concrete room with
an oversized drum riser for a stage and a bar manager that's on
your soundman's back all night about the volume. We've all been
there way too many times! Since 4X12's and rooms of this nature
just don't seem to get along at all, I figured this would be a great
test for The Enhancer. I decided to bring out my Boogie DC3 combo
and set up for what was soon to be a night of "pure tone heaven"!
First off, the DC3 is a sweet little thang all on it's own, but
no combo ever sounds as fat as a closed back cabinet to me, until
now. The depth The Enhancer produced was simply awesome, sounding
3 to 4 times fatter than before. The speaker tightend up as well,
adding more crispness to the mids and highs and creating tone that
would rival the baddest-assed of 4X12's. Equally astounding was
the fact that I had the master volume up about half of what I usually
set it at. My clean tones were warm and rich with a smooth shimmer
on the top end. My overdriven and distorted tones unleashed an incredible
roar with punchy mids and sweet glistening highs. I had to look
back all night to remind myself which rig I was playing through!
Smokin'!
Some of the biggest benefits may be what you don't hear. As I said
earlier, because of the increased efficiency and the fact that the
speaker is now in your face rather than giving you a sonic enema,
your stage volume has been cut drastically. Another plus is the
fact that half of your sound isn't uncontrollably flying out of
the back of you amp for all but you to hear! My soundman was overjoyed!
He could actually turn the PA down and get a great mix because he
didn't have to compete with my stage volume. No more hostile bar
manager! How cool is that?
The Enhancer is also onehellofa lot easier to cart around than
a 4x12. I stood it up on end, stacked the Boogie on top, and dollied
the whole works out in one trip with my guitar in one hand steering
the two-wheeler with the other! Very cool!
Bottom Line:
If you want to greatly improve your combo amp or open backed cabinet's
tone and performance, and have a great amp stand at the same time,
The Enhancer is for you. You can kiss folding chairs goodby and
leave the 4x12 in the truck, because you won't need either of them!
Man, why didn't I think of this a long time ago!
