Back
to the review chamber we gather to test-drive our latest hot rod.
Our fine friends at Carvin have submitted their new "California
Carved Top" solid bodied guitar for review this month. In my
opinion, Carvin guitars and basses have been severely under rated
for the past several years, so as a fan of Carvin guitars, I am
really excited to check out the Carved Top. One of the companies
higher end solid bodies, the California Carved Top is the companies
mission to establish itself into the more boutique line of guitars
that have become overwhelmingly popular over the past several years.
After a thorough test, here is what I have discovered about the
Carvin California Carved Top...
Love at First Site?...
Very well could be. At first glance, The California Carved Top resonates
with a classy, boutiquish vibe. Of course the first thing I notice
personally, is the quality of the top. But I must admit, I'm somewhat
of a psycho when it comes to tops. I would say that this top is
impressive. This model features a 20mm thick flamed maple top over
a Honduras Mahogany body. Traditionally, two woods that have stood
the test of time, both for their incredible warm tone and natural
figuring. This model is stained in a beautiful Ruby Red. The flame
in this top is certainly above average with variations of thin to
medium wide striations. Natural binding around the double cut body,
string through body, gold hardware with tune-o-matic bridge. Volume,
tone, tele type knobs, three way pu splitter where the tone control
is also a push/pull coil splitter, all recessed into the body. Two
hums with Carvin's own C22N and C22B in black and creme with creme
pickup rings. The California Carved Top also features a mahogany
set in neck with an Ebony board and very nice Abalone block inlays.
Carvin has also redesigned the headstock on this model sporting
a smaller, sleeker headstock. Matching Ruby Red flamed headstock
(of course!) with three on a side locking Sperzel tuners. The headstock
is topped off with a gloss black trust rod cover. These amenities
are all first class, this combined with the newly designed "carved
top" body, this guitar is classy and elegant. The California
Carved Top weighs in at a manageable 8.25 lbs.
She's a Looker, But Can She Play?...
Cosmetic beauty of a guitar is certainly secondary to its playability
and tone. However in this day and age we expect a good looking guitar
with a nice top. At least I do. It's nice to drive a car that runs
good, but nobody wants to ride in a rust bucket. I first spend a
few minutes with this guitar playing acoustically. Ya know it's
funny, you usually know within minutes of playing a guitar if it
is "right for you"! This is when the first impression
hits, and we all know you do not get a second chance to get a first
impression. My first impression playing this guitar is an enjoyable
one. The neck is fat and round but not bulky or prohibitive. The
Jumbo frets on this 22 fret ebony neck feel great. The guitar is
set up well with medium low action with just a slight twist in the
neck to accommodate a little lower action on the high "E"
side, and a bit higher on the low "E" side. The tune -o-matic
bridge is recessed and bolted right into the body. Combine this
with a string through body system and this guitar rings strong and
proud...even acoustically. Time to get...
Wired...
Plug
in time. My favorite. My usual array of weapons of tone is available;
a Marshall JCM 800 Dual Channel 50w half stack, a Mesa Dual Rec.
and a 5150 Block letter early model half stack. I plug into the
5150 first, simply because it has been awhile. Testing at moderate
volumes. In the overdriven channel of the 5150, I have my pregain
on 4 1/2 (you know how 5150's can get a bit carried away in the
gain department). In the bridge position of the Carved Top, the
tone is instantly and undeniable sweet, thick and heavy without
the unwanted mush of over saturation, a nicely balanced EQ with
a warm midrange. Power chords are right, low end seems very well
balanced even in lower drop "D" tunings. Ya know I had
a Carvin C22B pickup that I had put in a neck thru Kramer Barretta
years ago. Although I had traded that guitar several years ago,
I do recall I really liked that pickup. So this was somewhat of
a De JA Vu experience with the carved top. Leads are cutting and
chimey without harshness, compiled with strong singing sustain.
It's all about warmth to me, either a guitar or an amp, and this
tone is exactly that...warm. In the neck position, this tone is
not as hot but doesn't lack any balls either. I do not like pickups
that are "too" hot; I personally prefer to let my amp
provide me with the additional saturation if I need it.
Moving on to a Mesa Dual Rectifier, I dial up my clean tones. I
love the clean channel of this amp. With the Carved Top pickup setting
in the middle position allowing me to utilize both the neck and
bridge pickup together, this tone really put a smile on my face.
This tone is surprisingly clean for humbucking pickups. I can't
recall playing through a humbucker that was capable of this clean
of a tone. Great clean bottom end, especially on full strumming
patterns. When I added a bit of chorus to this setting, it literally
knocked me out, spacious and airy, with a well balanced bottom end
with just the right amount of sparkle on the top end. I then experimented
with the coil tap option. The tone control actually is a push/pull
pot to engage this feature. And as you can well expect, the sweet
just got a little sweeter! More spank and a little less spunk, not
quite a Strat, not quite a Tele, but something in between! In the
overdriven channel of the Dual Rec. the Carved Top produced a huge,
balls to the wall tone, which was very enjoyable to try and tame.
Ample sustain and overtones were a breeze to produce, without all
the unwanted barking from over the top output pickups.
Bottom Line...
Congratulations Carvin for producing a guitar that looks, feels,
and sounds like a high end boutique instrument, without the high
end boutique price tag. This guitar direct from Carvin is under
$1,500, and that is with all the bells and whistles, including a
great top, premium hardware and electronics, even a vintage style
tweed case. This guitar also includes a SNAGG Microchip that ensures
an electronic serial # and instrument authenticity. This system
will provide verification of ownership if the instrument is ever
lost or stolen. The California Carved Top is a beautifully crafted
instrument, that looks, plays and sounds like a guitar that should
cost twice as much as what it does, and really isn't that the bottom
line?
