This month I was the lucky recipient of a nice new wireless mike
to check out for you boys and girls. So I loaded all the rock and
roll gear into the truck with the new wireless from Audio-Technica
and headed down the road for a grueling rock and roll weekend.
Friday we set up this unit for a rock and roll band with a full
blown horn section. The room was way small and it was a real high
class party. I was worried if I had made the right decision to check
out unknown gear right out of the box at an important gig where
unexpected problems can bite you in the posterior. We were running
behind schedule (the venue had STAIRS!!!!) and were hurrying to
set up the monitor system before the guests got there. I had some
time to dial in the 4 mix monitor system, putting the A-T wireless
into all the monitor wedges and doing some light EQ to all the wedge
mixes to take care of the known hot frequencies of the wedge monitors.
The band took the stage and started in without ever having a sound
check. Those boys hit it hard and kept rockin' all nite. The Horn
section was smoking and had the power of a freight train coming
down the tracks. It was WAY COOL!
Now you are wondering... why I am telling you all this, this piece
of gear could have really screwed me over. No testing before the
gig, never seen it before and putting it into a sound system and
a room combination that could have been a recipe for disaster.
This piece of gear performed beyond my expectations for the evening.
The lead singer liked it and commented on how light and clean sounding
it was. This singer was screaming, growling and grunting into this
mike and the band was hearing everything perfectly
(actually a little too perfectly by how they were picking on him
at the end of the night!)
Next day, outdoor gig , hot sun, high humidity, dead singer is
a spitter and a screamer, loud heavy band, cranked up monitors so
the performers could hear. The wireless performs flawlessly on one
of the hottest and most humid days of the year.
Next day, indoor gig in a bar the size of a large closet. I have
always had problems getting mikes to sound good thru wedges in this
room, usually a real chore to make the monitor system work well.
No problems, no feedback, great sound, vocalist was thrilled! He
had just played on a huge stage the day before at a blues festival
to 20,000 people and he said this mike in this tiny bar sounded
better than the one on the huge outdoor system the day before!
There ya go! Three different days, three different circumstances,
three different singers with different vocal styles. This wireless
mike ROCKS.
Now I have skipped all the technical mumbo jumbo up to here, cause
I feel most people want to know how a piece of gear really works
in the real world. But there are a few really cool things the folks
at Audio-Technica did that you need to know.
This unit uses 2 AA batteries and they can last up to 9 hours.
This mike is EXTREMELY light (no user fatigue here!). It has phenomenal
reception, AND it has a special circuit that mutes the output so
if you turn the mike on or off, or walk out of range, there is no
static. It is also UHF, rackmountable, able to use antenna accessories,
and has 10 agile frequencies so you can use it all over the country
and still get a good channel for reception.
The folks at Audio-Technica really did a nice job on this piece
of gear for you, to make your rock and roll dreams come to life!
So, go out and try one out at your local dealer soon! You'll be
glad you did!
Thanks guys! YOU ROCK!
